Granny chic

I find as I get older, my aesthetics change according to the influences in my life. I’m sure it’s the same with everybody as it’s a part of us growing and evolving as people. Although my tastes can vary somewhat, I do tend to lean towards the “Anthropologie” side of things. Which leads me to doilies. To be honest, a couple of years ago, I never thought much of doilies. Or its creative potential. But doilies are crafty and quite frankly, pretty girly. It’s a look that we’re seeing more of, even a year later, when it first slowly started its comeback. You see doily patterns printed on cups, imprinted on pottery, on jewelry designs, among many other things. As an accent here and there, I think it definitely adds dimension in rooms with their holey and intricate patterns.  As an applique, it’s really lovely. The last time I used a doily was in grade school when I glued layered heart doilies onto my manila Valentine’s Day envelope. Ah, memories! ~yy

Creative Friends…Series 2

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Happy Sunday everybody! Hope that it’s a lovely day for all.

I thought I’d finally do another post on my “Creative Friends”.  I find it ironic, that this friend that I’m featuring today, actually told me the other night that she went to the blog and I need to pick up the slack! Hahahaha. The nerve :P . And here I am featuring her awesome knitting skills still. Bah.

Well, I can’t deny her talent. I’ve been trying to get Mary to start an Etsy shop for awhile now, but so far no luck. Basically if you’re a family member or a friend (like myself), you get to reap the rewards. Her little Amigurumi (Japanese art of knitting/crocheting small stuffed animals) are just so sweet! But not limited to just stuffed animals, Mary does knitted accessories like berets, scarves and headwarmers. I’ve been so lucky to be on the receiving end of many of these things. I have a scarf from years ago that’s saved me from the cold Canadian weather!

mary and i are two peas in a pod!

they come out too!

So there were 2 purposes for this post. A) was to pimp Mary’s talent out. And B) was to express how very grateful I am to have a friend that I could have a conversation like this with:

***

Y: Look at this earwarmer (insert link). I’m thinking of getting it on Etsy. Isn’t it so cute??

M: Oh, I can make that for you.

Y: Are you serious?

M: Yeah, it’s pretty straightforward.

Y: Uh…ok. THANKS! I’m going to wear it all the time!

M: np.

***

Yeah lucky. That’s me!

So for now, I’m going to keep working on Mary about this Etsy store thing…I’ll keep you posted.

Granny Squares

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

S has started her own craft project — a granny square afghan! (She needed something to do while she watched Fringe). Here’s a few squares she’s completed already and she’s on her way to becoming a crocheting machine. It’s simple to do and it’s gonna be a perfect blanket for summer naps or to wrap herself in for more Fringe viewing.

There’s some great samples of granny square afghans here.

And some patterns here if you want to start your own!
